Data Management

A guide to how Tagger stores your data and the options available for saving, opening and backing up your games, squads and configurations.

Overview

Tagger is available as both a web application and a desktop application. While both versions support saving to your local device and to a cloud workspace, the way data is stored internally differs between the two. Understanding this will help you protect your data and adopt the right workflow for your needs.

Tagger Web

In the web version of Tagger, all data — including games, squads and configurations — is held in your browser's local cache. This means your data is tied to the specific browser and device you are using, and is not automatically persisted anywhere else.

Browser cache can be cleared automatically by the browser or manually by the user. This would result in permanent data loss. It is strongly recommended to save your data to your local device or a cloud workspace after every session.

Saving Your Data

To safeguard your work, save your data to one of the following locations after each session:

  • Local device — export your game, squad or configuration as a JSON file directly to your device. These files can be re-imported into Tagger at any time, on any device.
  • Cloud Workspace — connect to OneDrive or Google Drive and save your files to the cloud. This gives you access to your data from any device and makes it easy to share with team staff or players.

For full details on setting up and using a Cloud Workspace, see the Cloud Workspace documentation.

Saving a Game

From the Game menu, select Save. You will be prompted to choose whether to save to your local device or to your cloud workspace.

Saving a Squad

In the Squads section, on the individual Squad menu select Save. You will be prompted to choose whether to save to your local device or to your cloud workspace.

Saving a Configuration

In the Configuration section, on an individual Configuration menu select Save Configuration. You will be prompted to choose whether to save to your local device or to your cloud workspace.

Opening and Importing Data

To re-open a previously saved file, use the Open option in the relevant section (Game, Teams or Configuration). Files can be loaded from your local device or directly from your cloud workspace.

Tagger Desktop

The desktop application offers the same save and open options as the web version, with one important addition: Tagger Desktop includes an in-built local database that automatically persists your data as you work.

Automatic Database Saving

Every game you create or modify in Tagger Desktop is automatically saved to the local database on your device. There is no need to manually save to avoid losing your work mid-session — your progress is preserved continuously in the background.

Games Page

The Games page in Tagger Desktop provides a central view of all games stored in the local database. From here you can:

  • Re-open any previously created or imported game
  • Review game details at a glance
  • Delete games you no longer need

Exporting and Backing Up Your Data

Even though Tagger Desktop saves automatically to its local database, it is good practice to also save a copy of your game to your local file system or cloud workspace on a regular basis. This provides an additional layer of protection in the event of device failure or data corruption, and makes it straightforward to share games with others or access them from a different device.

To export a game, squad or configuration, use the Save option from the relevant section and choose your preferred destination.

Database Backup and Restore

Tagger Desktop also provides the ability to back up and restore your entire database in a single operation. This includes all games, squads, configurations, events and other application data. A full database backup is the safest way to protect all of your data at once.

It is recommended to create a database backup on a regular basis — ideally once a week, or after adding a new game, configuration or squad. This ensures you always have a recent snapshot to fall back on in case of device failure or accidental data loss. Also make a backup before upgrading the application or moving to a new device.

Creating a Database Backup

To create a full database backup:

  1. Open the Info section from the application menu.
  2. In the Desktop App Information card, click the Backup Database button.
  3. Choose where to save your backup:
    • Cloud Workspace — saves the backup directly to your connected OneDrive or Google Drive workspace (requires a connected cloud workspace).
    • Local File System — saves the backup as a file on your local device.

The backup file contains a complete snapshot of your database at that point in time, including the number of games, events and database size for your reference.

Restoring from a Database Backup

To restore your database from a previous backup:

  1. Open the Info section from the application menu.
  2. In the Desktop App Information card, click the Restore Database button.
  3. Choose the source of your backup:
    • Cloud Workspace — browse and select a backup file from your connected cloud workspace.
    • Local File System — select a backup file from your local device.

Restoring from a backup will replace your current database with the contents of the backup file. Any data created after the backup was taken will be lost. Consider creating a new backup of your current database before performing a restore.
